After months of planning and foundation building, I’ve reached the most exciting stage of the business and have started designing the first collection.  It was difficult knowing quite where to start, as there are so many ideas and themes I could explore.

Being the first season it’s all about setting the tone for the brand.  Working out what the core elements are and what I’m trying to say.  I knew that I wanted to create a contemporary look with a luxurious femininity.  One that is confidently design led without overpowering the woman wearing it.

My instinct took me back to the subjects I first explored in my graduate collection at university.  Although many years have past, and I have designed so many collections since then, it was the last time I was completely free to develop my own vision.  My professional design experience has been about tailoring my handwriting to align with someone else’s brand.  Now I am defining my own look.  It feels natural to pick up on the direction I started, apply what I’ve learned with a refinement to build the foundation of the Mya Rose aesthetic.

My personal design interest has always been in two very different areas.  Towards a directional, forward thinking look from designers like Chalayan and Haider Ackermann. But also to designers like Valentino, Chloe and Nina Ricci who bring a femininity that I find irresistible.  Combining elements of these influences seemed like the right place to start, bringing together the different strands that inspire me as a designer.

I have also always been drawn to modern architecture.  From the fluid, curved lines of Zaha Hadid to the neofuturistic style of Santiago Calatrava.  In my graduate collection I combined structure with fluidity, exploring the contrasts in form and fabrication.  This feels like the perfect way to introduce the directional element. So I am revisiting the architectural theme, looking at graphic lines, shapes and textures.  Then to bring these elements into context, combining them with a feminine styling and softness that is flattering and sophisticated.

The collection is still a work in progress and will continue to develop and evolve as I work on it, but I am excited by the direction it’s taking and seeing it come together.  I feel very positive and excited about where it’s going and energised for the next phase of development – watch this space!
